A surety bond is where a third party, such as a local bail bondsman, agrees to assume responsibility for the person appearing for court in exchange for a fee. Consider this example: the bond is set at $5,000. Rather than drain their savings account to post their bond, the person gets in touch with a bondsman. In New York City, bondsmen charge anywhere from 6 to 10 percent of the bond.
